Michael Coffin, a chief scientist at Elevation Distro, a cannabis manufacturing and distribution company based in California, is concerned that many people are not cleaning up their reaction products properly, resulting in "quite a soup" of byproducts and other undesired substances.
On January 17, 2022, an examination of this "soup" was published in Chemical Research in Toxicology. The authors studied 27 Delta 8 Products from ten different brands and discovered none were labeled correctly, 11 contained unlabeled cutting agents, and all contained reaction byproducts, including heavy metals.
