4 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT DELTA-8-THC | Titan Botanicals

 Key Points:

  • Delta 8 Thc is a naturally occurring cannabinoid compound found in cannabis. It is both legal and unrestricted.

  • Delta 8 has a similar experience to delta-9; however, it is slightly weaker.

  • Concerns have been raised about improper labeling and pollutants due to the absence of regulation.

The sudden appearance and rapid growth in popularity of delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC or delta-8) is a classic tale of unanticipated consequences and loopholes that ambitious businesses learn to exploit.

Delta-8 is a naturally occurring cannabinoid compound found in cannabis.

The cannabis plant contains approximately 100 identical chemicals known as cannabinoids, most of which are present in minute amounts and have unclear functions. THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most abundant psychoactive chemical in popular marijuana strains. When a double bond between two carbon atoms shifts slightly, delta-8 is formed, which has similar effects to delta-9 but is only two-thirds as strong. Delta-8 was previously unknown since cannabis plants contain only 0.1 percent delta-8, which is insufficient to extract profitably.

Delta-8 is both lawful and unrestricted.

The 2018 Farm Bill made industrial hemp products permissible if the delta-9 concentration was less than 0.3 percent. This bill allowed for a significant increase in cannabidiol (CBD) production, which is present in sufficient quantities in hemp to be extracted profitably. When overproduction of CBD resulted in an oversupply that caused prices to collapse in 2020, the industry began exploring novel methods to benefit from the excess CBD. In the 1960s, simple chemistry developed employing solvents such as toluene began to convert CBD Products into delta-8.

Because the Farm Bill made no mention of delta-8, it remained legal on a federal level, and only 14 states have banned its sale too far. According to Ian Laird of the data analytics company Hemp Benchmarks, it has been the fastest-growing segment of the hemp-derived market this year because it can be offered on the Internet, mailed through the US Postal Service, and sold in gas stations, convenience stores, and cannabis dispensaries. Delta-8 has a similar experience to delta-9; however, it is slightly weaker.

Delta-8 was initially administered to six volunteers already familiar with delta-9 in 1973, resulting in an estimate of its effects and potency being roughly two-thirds that of delta-91. An online poll of 521 users published on January 4, 2022, in the Journal of Cannabis Research titled "Delta-8-THC: Delta-9-THC's sweeter younger sibling?" provided more extensive research of delta-8's effects. 2 The majority of delta-8 users said they had "a lot or a great deal" of the following experiences:

  • Unwinding (71 percent)

  • ecstasy (68 percent)

  • Pain alleviation (55 percent)

The following cognitive distortions were encountered in a "moderate amount or a lot":

  • Concentration problems (81 percent)

  • Problems with short-term memory (80 percent)

  • Awakened sense of time (74 percent)

Participants typically preferred delta-8 to delta-9, with 74% not experiencing anxiety and 83% denying paranoia.

Concerns have been raised about improper labeling and pollutants due to the absence of regulation.

Michael Coffin, a chief scientist at Elevation Distro, a cannabis manufacturing and distribution company based in California, is concerned that many people are not cleaning up their reaction products properly, resulting in "quite a soup" of byproducts and other undesired substances.

On January 17, 2022, an examination of this "soup" was published in Chemical Research in Toxicology. The authors studied 27 Delta 8 Products from ten different brands and discovered none were labeled correctly, 11 contained unlabeled cutting agents, and all contained reaction byproducts, including heavy metals. These byproducts were frequently a range of different cannabinoids whose properties had not yet been defined, as well as a unique cannabinoid that had never been seen before. Their issue is that the complete lack of testing and regulation makes vouching for the safety of delta-8 at this time impossible.

Poison control center reports pediatric hospitalizations due to unintended ingestions to complicate matters, as do adverse events reported to the FDA, including vomiting, hallucinations, difficulty standing, and loss of consciousness. It's impossible to say whether any of these side effects are worse than those induced by delta-9 or if delta-8 or its widespread pollutants cause them. California is exploring fixing this issue by incorporating delta-8 into its legal cannabis framework, which would need testing, proper labeling, and taxation.

Closing Remarks

Delta 8 affects the brain and changes the mind by stimulating the same cannabinoid receptors as its sibling delta-9 (see How Marijuana Works and The Two Ingredients for Understanding Cannabis for more detail). We don't know much else. Is delta-8 less effective at activating cannabinoid receptors than delta-9, or does it affect them differently in other ways? Do CBD Products have the same effect on Delta 8 THC Products as it does on delta-9 if it has any effect on delta-8 at all? And, if 74 percent of delta-8 users deny feeling anxious, does this imply that it causes anxiety in the other 26 percent?

Delta-8 is a fascinating chemical from both a physiological and an entrepreneurial standpoint, according to an objective cannabis observer. The delta-8 narrative will undoubtedly continue to move quickly. At the very least, we should all hope that people's health and safety will be better protected shortly by ensuring precise testing and labeling.
